Gesso Finish This beautiful finish was applied over an existing finish using the following formula: Step 1: Sand existing finish, apply oil base primer and spray 2 coats Benjamin Moore Aqua Velvet Latex Eggshell Enamel color # 1130. Step 2: Apply McCloskey's Weathered Crackle glaze (or your favorite crackle glue) to areas where you would like to see the gesso crack. I usually apply the crackle glue to only about 25% of the total area. Try to imagine where the heaviest accumulation of paint would occur if the cabinets were brushed and apply the glue there. Step 3: Apply the gesso with a brush leaving brush marks in the direction of the wood grain (some people find it easier to use latex paint instead of gesso). Step 4: Sand the gesso and apply sanding sealer. Glaze with Woodkote stain formula 16-007 (see antique paint formulas). Step 5: Seal and spatter with glaze 16-007. Seal and spatter with UTC stain color Burnt umber. Seal and dry brush edges with UTC burnt umber. Apply finish lacquer.
